Most parents equate kid's parties with a huge expense, and with good reason. Many parents today seem to go totally over the top, paying out both for extravagant parties and expensive party bags.

Party bags need not be so expensive and certainly do not have to contain CDs or other pricey items I have seen given to kids at some parties. A balloon, a piece of cake, a bar of chocolate and one small present, carefully chosen is certainly sufficient. A small car or puzzle for boys and a hair slide or necklaces which glow for the girls.

And the party itself! Many parents seem to feel the need to compete with other in the cost of the party and throw expensive parties with professional magicians or at a costly venue. Often the child is so young that he or she does not even know what is going on!

An inexpensive party which never fails to please is to hire a bouncy castle and stick it in the garden. It will keep the kids amused for hours and you can also save on costly catering by making the food yourself. The traditional sandwiches, cake and jelly and ice cream appeal to kids just as much as they did when we were young.

So save your money and don’t feel the need to keep up with the Joneses when it comes to parties.
